Toto is one of the most loved groups in the world. With over 35 million records sold worldwide and countless collaborations with some of the biggest artists (Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Steely Dan), Toto has become synonymous with credibility in music. Through the years Toto has changed and their fans have kept pace with their evolution. They’ve also changed their approach by creating new songs and touring to the ever-changing music industry.
In the beginning of 1981, Toto released their third album Turn Back, which was an evolution from their previous sound. It was a huge hit in Japan however it did not chart well in the US, and their record label began to question whether they could continue as a group. The album also included a different lead singer, Fergie Frederiksen, who was not an original member of the group. The band decided to hold an audition for a replacement and chose Joseph Williams, who had previously been the guitarist on several live recordings.
The band went on tour in 1998 to promote the album, and to mark their 40th anniversary. They released a boxset Old Is New. The box set included the three tracks from 40 Trips Around the Sun as in addition to the final recordings of four older tracks featuring Jeff Porcaro playing drums and David Hungate, Mike Porcaro or Mike Porcaro playing bass.
Following the tour, the group released The Best of Toto and reconvened with a lineup including Huey Lewis and the News keyboardist Robert “Sput ” Searight and drummer John Pierce. In 2024, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes and drummer Shannon Forrest replaced Taplin and Searight, and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham joined the band.
Toto is currently working on a new studio album and has announced that they will be performing live at the Zenith de Paris – La Villette on February 12, 2025.
